The European Algae Biomass Association (EABA) and DLG Markets Benelux, organisers of AlgaEurope 2026, announce China as the first-ever Partner Country in the event’s history, launching an annual initiative that will spotlight a different collaborating nation each year.

AlgaEurope 2026 will be held in Malta from 8 to 11 December 2026 and is expected to welcome a prominent international delegation, with China playing a central role.

A Global Collaboration Programme

From 2026, AlgaEurope launches its Partner Country Programme to strengthen international cooperation, expand global industry engagement, and consolidate long-term strategic alliances between Europe and the world’s leading algae-producing nations. This initiative reflects the increasingly global dimension of the sector and AlgaEurope’s commitment to leading international dialogue between science, industry, and policy.

Why China?

China was selected as the inaugural Partner Country for four key reasons:

  • Global leadership in algae production. China is the world’s largest producer of algae biomass, leading global seaweed and microalgae aquaculture, with a rapidly expanding sector serving food, cosmetics, nutraceuticals, and industrial applications.
  • Alignment with AlgaEurope’s international vision. China’s participation reinforces AlgaEurope’s position as a truly global platform, connecting European and international stakeholders across the algae value chain.
  • High value for participants. The focus on China offers attendees privileged access to specialised expertise, cutting-edge technologies, market insights, and real opportunities for collaboration, business development, and joint research.
  • Strong potential for EU–China cooperation. There is solid mutual interest in technology transfer, joint R&D, investment, industrial partnerships, and the harmonisation of standards and sustainability practices. The Partner Country Programme provides a structured framework to turn that interest into tangible cooperation.

Voices from the Key Players

The China Algae Industry Association will serve as the official partner of the event, with a shared commitment to developing this relationship beyond the conference itself and building a lasting collaboration.

“We are very pleased to see China selected as the first Partner Country of AlgaEurope. This partnership reflects China’s openness to international collaboration and our shared commitment to advancing algae technologies, sustainability, and industrial innovation together with our European partners,” said Dr. Fengzheng Gao, Vice President of the Microalgae Branch of the China Algae Industry Association.

“For years, AlgaEurope has been one of the most comprehensive and international conferences on science, technology, and business in the algae biomass sector. With the introduction of the Partner Country Programme and China as our first partner, we are taking a decisive step toward strengthening AlgaEurope’s global impact and long-term international cooperation,” said Carlos Unamunzaga, President of EABA.
