Shrimp exports to the US exceeded 1 billion USD for the first time

Vietnam – Shrimp exports to the US grew strongly in 2021 and crossed the $1 billion mark in a year for the first time in this important market.

According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) quoted the General Department of Customs, said that as of December 15, 2021, Vietnam’s shrimp exports to the US reached 1.02 billion USD, an increase 22% over the same period in 2020. Vietnam’s shrimp exports to the US in 2021 are estimated at about 1.05 billion USD, up 21% compared to 2020.

This is the first time shrimp exports to the US surpassed the US$1 billion mark in a year. The US is currently Vietnam’s largest shrimp import market, accounting for 28% of total shrimp export value.

Vietnam’s shrimp exports to the US have grown positively in all months of 2021 and accumulated 12 months with the best growth rate among the top shrimp main markets of Vietnam.

According to VASEP, Vietnam’s shrimp exports to the US in the first quarter of 2022 are expected to maintain a positive growth rate.

Vietnam is currently ranked 5th in shrimp supply to the US. In 2021, Vietnam is among the top suppliers with positive growth in shrimp supply to the US.

The US is the world’s leading shrimp import market. From 2016-2020, the value of shrimp imports from the US ranges from 5.7 to 6.5 billion USD, the import volume ranges from 606,000 to 749,000 tons. In 2021, the US shrimp import volume surpassed 800,000 tons for the first time, the shrimp import value surpassed the $7 billion mark for the first time.
