With almost 9% of the total fish quantities consumed fresh, seabream is the species n°1 in Italy. The Italian market is supplied at more than 75% by imports. Italy is indeed the main EU importer with more than 26.000 tonnes imported; Greece provides 60% of this total, but Turkey and Croatia both strongly developed their exports to Italy in the last years.
Fresh seabream is predominantly sold in the fish counters of the supermarkets, often through special offers. At the same time large-scale retailers developed private labels on Italy-farmed products.
For the fresh seabream farmed in Italy, the retail price in supermarkets, VAT excluded, is about twice the purchase price ex-farm. The retailer’s margin represents approximately 12% of the retailer price (excl. VAT).
