The Division of Sciences is one of the four teaching divisions in the University, the others being Health Sciences, Commerce, and Humanities. The Division of Sciences represents a broad range of disciplines in 15 Departments and a number of inter-disciplinary programmes.
The Department of Marine Science is a friendly, diverse and dynamic team, with research spanning biology, ecology, physical oceanography and geology. The department capitalises on the unique setting of the coastal Otago region, from local harbour and open beach environments to its position at the gateway to the Southern Ocean. We foster collaboration; our marine researchers forge links across and beyond the university. Our facilities include the Portobello Marine Laboratory on the Otago Peninsula, field stations in Fiordland and Stewart Island, and a range of research vessels enabling both local and offshore work. We conduct research on fisheries and aquaculture, focusing on innovative ways of ensuring sustainability of natural resources in a changing ocean. Our research programmes include strong postgraduate student involvement and the Department boasts a strong postgraduate student cohort.
