Bangladesh – Consultant (Artemia Pond Production Expert)

The salt industry in Bangladesh provides livelihood to more than a million people, however suffers from low productivity and lack of market expansion. The major constraints to improve the livelihoods of the salt cum fish farmers are increased operating costs for salt production, low productivity in aquaculture, the seasonal unemployment and vulnerability to climate induced risk.

The objectives of a European Commission funded Artemia4Bangladesh project is to enhance food and nutrition security of salt farmers through climate smart innovation. The specific objectives are to introduce an integrated salt and Artemia production system and increase marine aquaculture production and productivity in the salt farms in the Cox’s Bazar district.

Objectives

The project is looking for an Artemia pond production expert to support the project team in:

Training and facilitate proper Artemia pond layout preparation.
Training on the procedure of fertilization and application of agricultural waste in Artemia production.
Establish collaboration with Cantho University, Vietnam on Artemia pond production technologies in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh.

Scope of Work

Develop training materials and conduct virtual training on proper Artemia pond construction and lay out for cyst and biomass production (2 days).
Develop training materials and conduct virtual training on the procedure of fertilization and application of agricultural waste in Artemia pond production (2 days).
Facilitate formal collaboration (memorandum of agreement) between Can Tho University, Vietnam and Artemia4Bangladesh for hands on training, study visits, exchange of experience, research and innovation (2 days).
Prepare comprehensive reports and submit (after completion of the assignment) (1 day).

Deliverables

Supplying materials and guidance notes and conduct training on proper Artemia pond construction and lay out for cyst and biomass production.
Supplying materials and guidance notes and conduct training on the procedure of fertilization and application of agricultural waste in Artemia pond production.
Reports on formal collaboration between Can Tho University and Artemia4Bangladesh of WorldFish.

Requirements

Proven experience in Artemia research at least for 10 years.
Proven experience in Artemia production in salt farms at least for 10 years.
Ability to design and conduct Artemia production research in the salt farms.
Ability to conduct virtual training on Artemia pond production.
Ability to establish research and development collaboration between Can Tho University, Vietnam and Bangladesh.
Educational Requirements: Ph.D. degree in the relevant field.
Location and Duration

The successful consultant will be based in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh with extensive field visit. The selection of consultant will be based on the relevant qualification and experience, and the most competitive proposal. The interviews are expected to be held in October 2020 and only shortlisted consultant will be notified and expected to attend the interview. The successful consultant should be available to commence the consultancy contract for a maximum of seven (7) working days in between November 2020 and February 2021.
