Bergen, Norway.- Over the past four years, with a budget of NOK 70 million and around 45 planned scientific articles, researchers have endeavoured to find out what effect fish and seafood consumption have on our health. The Fish Intervention Studies project (FINS) is near completion and the results are starting to come in.

USA.- Expanding the nearshore finfish industry or establishing an offshore industry in the United States carries significant risks to aquatic ecosystems and public health, according to a report published today by researchers at the Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future in the Bloomberg School of Public Health’s Department of Environmental Health and Engineering.

Ames, USA.- Iowa State University Extension and Outreach has released a pair of publications designed to provide information and guidance for anyone thinking of constructing his or her own aquaponics system. Aquaponics is a system that combines aquaculture (raising fish in tanks) with hydroponics (cultivating plants in water), growing the fish and plants together in one integrated system.

In a new study, Jean-Charles Massabuau from University of Bordeaux and his colleagues investigated the impact of noise on 32 oysters in the laboratory, using a loudspeaker to play sounds underwater in a range of frequencies. The researchers found that oysters rapidly closed their shells at sound frequencies between 10 and 1000 hertz. Their maximum sensitivity was at low frequencies (between 10 and to 200 hertz).
